Many readers will be saddened by the death of John Eisenberg. John was a pioneer in health services research and a champion of evidence-based medicine and “value-for-money” health care (1) in the United States and around the world. He played many important roles in internal medicine, including chief of the Division of General Internal Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania, chair of the Department of Medicine and physician-in-chief at Georgetown University, member of the Board of Regents and a Master of the American College of Physicians, and a founding member of the editorial board of ACP Journal Club. He went far beyond these roles as the director of the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality and developed many important programs there, including the Evidence-Based Practice Centers. John was a good friend, mentor, and role model for many of us. He deserved and received many accolades, some details of which can be found at www.ahcpr.gov/news/jme/index.html.
